Description

The blooms are often formed in flower-heads that are 1-3 cm in diameter and have a deep blue hue. A center cluster of disc florets is surrounded by a ring of a few big, spreading ray florets. Pyocyanin, the red pigment found in roses, is the blue pigment. It blooms all summer long.

The cornflower, Centaurea cyanus, is an annual plant that can grow up to 3 feet by 1 foot. It has branched, gray-green stems and stunning blue blossoms that resemble stars. Despite its striking beauty, farmers always view cornflowers as unwanted weeds because they take nutrients from the soil that corn needs to grow. The blooms are fertilized by bees, flies, lepidoptera, and the blossoms themselves. The flowers have both male and female organs. The plant can reproduce itself.
