This African native plant derives its name from the way its fruit looks: it has hooks all over it that are designed to catch on animals and disperse the seeds. Medicine is made from the plant’s roots and tubers. Devil’s claw is used to treat conditions like “hardening of the arteries” (atherosclerosis), fever, gout, arthritis, myalgia, back pain, tendonitis, chest pain, gastrointestinal (GI) upset, and heartburn. In addition, it is used to treat kidney and bladder diseases, allergic reactions, menstrual issues.
