Description

Yarrow is a perennial herb belonging to the Asteraceae family. It grows 30-90 cm in height and has an aromatic odor. The leaves are greyish-green due to numerous small hairs. The stem is angular and mostly unbranched, except near the top. Yarrow has a rich history, dating back 2000 years, and was first recorded in the medical textbook of Dioscorides. Interestingly, it was named after Achilles, the Greek mythical figure who used it to staunch bleeding wounds in his soldiers.

The leaves of Yarrow are alternate, 3-5 inches long, and delicately fernlike with many leaflets on each side of the midrib. These leaflets further divide into smaller segments. The upper leaf surface is faintly pubescent, while the lower surface is more densely covered. The leaves cluster at the base of the stem and have linear lobes with finely pointed whitish tips.

At the top of the stem, Yarrow produces large, compact clusters of flower heads. Each cluster contains 20-25 yellowish-white ray flowers and similarly colored disk flowers. While the flowers are typically white, pink or pale purple variations are common in mountainous areas. The petals are densely arranged, resembling feathers.

Yarrow spreads rapidly and is resistant to drought, making it useful for combating soil erosion. Medicinally, the flowers, leaves, and stems are collected while in bloom.

Instruction: For a hot infusion using dried Yarrow:

  1. Take 2-3 tablespoons of dried Yarrow herb.
  2. Place it in a cup or teapot.
  3. Pour hot water over it and cover with a lid.
  4. Let it steep for 10-30 minutes.
  5. Strain and squeeze out as much liquid as possible.
  6. Enjoy your herbal infusion!

You may:

  • Sweeten your Yarrow tea with honey, natural fruit juice, stevia leaf powder, or licorice root powder.
  • Get creative by making Yarrow-infused ice cubes or popsicles!
