Carom seeds (Ajwain) are derived from a herbaceous, fragrant annual plant. The plant is tiny with soft, fine hair, highly branched, and grows to a height of 60–90 cm. It features feather-like leaves divided into two or three pinnate segments, leafy stems with numerous branches, and compound, terminal blooms.

The fruits are small, muricate, ovoid, and roughly 2–3 mm long. They have tubercular surfaces and compressed mericarps that are grayish-brown with five prominent ridges. The fruits resemble parsley in both size and shape and emit a strong, aromatic scent similar to thyme when rubbed. They have a highly intense aromatic taste.
